How do you handle a newborn, work, and school?

I am pregnant and my husband and I will be apart because he is in the military and may be deployed. We are currently together now but he will have to pcs soon. I have to go back to school to get my LVN and have to find a job because we have a lot of bills. How do people Juggle all these things? Any suggestions…

I’m not working at the moment, I am a single mother but I am currently living off savings, I am studying a degree from home and I didn’t think I could possibly juggle all three. However, now, I get most of my work done in the evening and night when my son is in bed. He is too demanding in the day to be able to get any work done at all, so after Christmas I am going to get a job to supplement what I’m living off as I’m not working during the daytime anyway. My son is 10.5 months though and is not too bad at nights now, he just wants constant entertaining during the day, that phase only started about 3 months ago. You might find it a little tough in the early weeks, but you will be surprised how much a newborn actually sleeps, it’s just generally in lots of divided chunks so it doesn’t feel like that much! But at that age you just have to make the most of the chunks the baby does sleep in and get the work you can do then. I won’t lie, you probably won’t be getting a great deal of sleep at first, but your body soon adjusts to that, and it’ll feel like it’s going on forever at the time but after just a few weeks your baby will hopefully be a better sleeper giving you more hours to utilise! And when your baby has a early-mid evening bedtime, then it’s fine, you can just study late evening and go to bed at a usual time! Hang in there, it’s not the easiest thing in the world but it IS doable, and it’ll get easier with time. Also remember, never be afraid to ask for help. If you have friends or family around and you’re struggling or have a deadline to meet, then just ask them to help you out, there’s nothing shameful in that at all. I tend to find that I do bits of work when I can and then when I have a deadline coming I have a huge go at it – with my last essay I eventually swallowed my pride and asked my dad if he minded looking after my son for the afternoon while I had the final push for this paper, and he was only happy to! Good luck honey, you’ll get through it and be so much stronger on the other side! x

Edit: And don’t listen to Worldly. Obviously she has never tried, so is talking out her backside. Why do people attempt to give advice on something they’ve never experienced? I HAVE done and AM doing this and as I said I am completely on my own, I’ll also make the point that my son has NEVER suffered or been ignored for my studies. I know I don’t have a job yet but as I said, during those hours I’m not able to do my work anyway, and in a few weeks I WILL be in your exact situation and I can tell you it will be just the same. You’ll be fine honey, don’t let people put you down. Of course your baby is your priority, as is mine, but by not completing your studies you’ll be doing your baby a greater disservice in the long term, as would I, as future salary depends solely on that education. Once again, good luck! x
